IELTS explained: choose your test and plan your next step
A practical guide to IELTS test options, the questions to resolve before booking and a preparation plan built around your purpose.
Explore your test options ↓What IELTS assesses, and why the test version matters
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, assesses English language proficiency. The familiar name covers more than one test option. Academic and General Training assess four skills; Life Skills serves a different, narrower purpose. Selecting a version is therefore part of the application decision, not simply a booking preference.
Begin with the organisation receiving your result. A university, employer, regulator or immigration authority may require a particular test and scores. Ask for the exact wording of the requirement and keep it beside you while comparing options. Avoid relying on another candidate’s choice, even if their destination sounds similar.

Academic, General Training, UKVI and Life Skills
Academic focuses on English for higher education and professional settings. General Training uses everyday and workplace contexts. Listening and Speaking are shared across Academic and General Training; Reading and Writing differ.
IELTS for UKVI includes Academic and General Training options with the arrangements required for relevant UK visa applications. IELTS for UKVI Life Skills assesses Speaking and Listening at the applicable CEFR level. It is not a four-skill substitute. Check the current application instructions rather than inferring a visa requirement from this overview.
| Option | Main distinction | Decision to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Academic | Academic Reading and Writing | Does the institution or regulator require Academic? |
| General Training | Everyday Reading and Writing | Is General Training named in your requirement? |
| IELTS for UKVI | Specific UKVI booking and security arrangements | Do your instructions require a UKVI-approved test? |
| Life Skills | Speaking and Listening at a specified level | Which Life Skills level does your application require? |

Understand the format before you build a study plan
Academic and General Training include Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Academic writing includes a task responding to visual information and an essay; General Training writing includes a letter and an essay. Read the official format for your selected test to understand the task requirements.
Delivery options and local availability must be checked at booking. The receiving organisation’s acceptance of a particular delivery mode also matters. For Life Skills, use its own task examples rather than a four-skill Academic practice pack.
- List the tasks you will actually take, including the Speaking arrangements.
- Try an official sample to identify where you need practice.
- Choose preparation resources matching the test version and delivery mode.

How to approach IELTS registration
Use the official IELTS booking resources to find the relevant test and provider for your location. The live booking flow is the place to confirm dates, delivery options and appointment details; this guide does not reserve a seat.
Confirm your application requirement
Write down the test version, required scores and the deadline for submitting results.
Find the appropriate official booking option
Search for your location and required test. Make sure a UKVI requirement is reflected in the actual booking.
Review the candidate instructions
Check identification, accessibility arrangements, Speaking scheduling and payment conditions with the selected provider.
Pay through the official provider
Review the final fee and appointment details. Retain the booking confirmation and any test-day instructions.

Registration requirements and identification
Identification conditions depend on your provider, country and chosen examination. Follow the instructions in the official booking flow and confirmation. Do not assume that a document accepted for another test will be accepted for IELTS, or that a phone photograph can replace the required original.
Before you pay, compare the candidate name and details with the document the provider requires. If that document is being renewed or your name has changed, ask the provider how to proceed. Obtain clarification directly instead of leaving the issue until test day.
- Confirm the document type and validity requirements for your appointment.
- Check whether any age, consent or access-arrangement steps apply.
- Keep your login, identity records and payment information private.

IELTS fees, payment and test locations
There is no single worldwide IELTS fee. The price depends on the location and test option. The British Council’s official location and booking tools let candidates check availability and fees for its centres; other official providers show their own local options.
Compare the full appointment, not only the price. Consider travel time, Speaking arrangements and your preparation schedule. Check change and cancellation conditions before payment, and keep the receipt. Any independent advisory charge should be discussed separately from the examination fee.

Prepare with the right tasks and a realistic schedule
Start with official sample questions, format information and assessment guidance. IELTS provides preparation resources for candidates; use them to understand the test before choosing additional study support.
Build your study plan from an observed gap. For example, if you struggle to finish a practice Reading task, review how you locate evidence in the passage before simply doing more full tests. If Writing is the difficulty, work on answering the actual task and organising an argument rather than memorising a generic essay.
Schedule practice across the assessed skills, keep brief notes about repeated errors and revisit those errors the following week. A timed practice result is feedback, not a promise of your examination score.

Scores, results and the receiving organisation
IELTS Academic and General Training report skill band scores and an overall band. The overall score is based on the average of the four skill scores, rounded under IELTS rules. A receiving organisation can require minimum skill scores in addition to an overall result. Life Skills uses a pass/fail outcome rather than the same four-skill band report.
Check the result-release information for your actual booking instead of assuming a universal turnaround time. Use your provider’s official result and sharing instructions. When planning around a deadline, allow room to clarify how the organisation wants to receive your result.

Common IELTS planning mistakes
Many avoidable problems begin with an assumption that was never checked. Use the following review before you book or choose a course.
- Booking Academic because a friend took it: compare your own application requirement first.
- Treating “UKVI” as interchangeable with any local IELTS booking: check the selected centre and test option.
- Preparing with the wrong Writing tasks: use materials for your exact test.
- Planning around an overall score only: check whether individual skill requirements apply.
- Leaving document or accessibility questions unresolved: ask the official provider before committing to an appointment.
- Expecting a guaranteed score from registration support: booking guidance and test performance are separate.
Candidate questions about IELTS
Which IELTS test should I book?
Use the receiving organisation’s exact requirement. Academic, General Training, IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills serve different needs; the destination country alone does not select the correct test.
Can I use Academic preparation for General Training?
Listening and Speaking overlap, but Reading and Writing differ. Check the official format and use test-specific practice for the components that change.
How much will my IELTS booking cost?
Check the selected official provider for your testing location and examination. Confirm the price and terms in its live booking flow rather than relying on an old advertisement.
Does Global Exam Advisors administer IELTS?
No. We provide independent examination consultation and registration-process guidance. Official booking, candidate rules, test administration and results remain with the relevant IELTS provider.
How can I get help choosing an IELTS option?
Share your goal, destination and the wording of the test requirement without sending sensitive documents. We can help identify the questions to clarify with the receiving organisation and official provider.
